Violence and Healthcare

Sentinel events, everyday violence, and near-misses are happening all over the country. Our hospitals: places that should, by definition, support health and healing, are becoming epicenters of violence.

Safety First

We need to ask ourselves what we would like from our healthcare system and those that work within it. We need to consider what a diet of violence and disrespect does to the two wolves within those that work in healthcare. If we want “joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.”, we must have safety first.

Healthcare is in the midst of rapid change. It is important that we, as healthcare workers, are mindful of where it is we are, the challenges we are facing, and where it is that we want to go.
